Privacy Policy

Locale ("we," "our," or "the app") is a personal connections app for iPhone. Your privacy is fundamental to how we built it.

The Short Version

Your roster stays on your device — your contacts, notes, photos, handles, and categories never leave it, and we can never see them. We do collect a small amount of anonymous, aggregate usage data (which features get used, how far people get in setup) to improve the app and measure our ads. It is not linked to your identity and never includes anything from your roster.

Data Storage

Everything you enter into Locale — names, phone numbers, Instagram handles, photos, notes, categories, and interaction history — is stored locally on your iPhone using Apple's CoreData framework, encrypted at rest using iOS file protection. There is no Locale account and no Locale server that stores your roster. We cannot see it.

Data We Collect

We collect anonymous usage data only — never your roster or any personal content. Specifically:

• Anonymous usage analytics. We record a fixed set of app events (e.g. "reached the paywall," "completed setup," "used a feature") and coarse counts, sent via a first-party connection to TelemetryDeck. Events are tied only to a random, salted, non-reversible identifier — never your name, handle, contacts, or notes. No third-party advertising SDK, no IDFA, no cross-app tracking.
• Apple Search Ads attribution. If you install Locale from an Apple ad, we use Apple's AdServices framework to learn which ad campaign/keyword drove the install, so we can measure our advertising. This uses only Apple's ad identifiers — it does not identify you and is not used to track you across apps.
• Instagram profile lookups. When you add an Instagram handle to someone, your device may fetch that public profile's information directly. This is a request from your phone; your roster is never sent to us.

We do not sell your data, and we never transmit your roster, notes, contacts, photos, or messages off your device.

Contacts Access

Locale requests permission to access your device's Contacts app solely to let you import contact information into Locale. This data is read from your device and stored locally within Locale. It is never transmitted externally.

Camera & Photo Library

Locale may request access to your camera or photo library to let you attach photos to your contacts. These photos are stored locally on your device within Locale's data. They are never uploaded or shared.

Notifications

Locale may send local push notifications to remind you to reach out to your contacts. These notifications are generated entirely on your device. No notification data is sent to or processed by any external server.

Face ID / Biometric Authentication

Locale uses Apple's LocalAuthentication framework to let you protect the app with Face ID or your device passcode. Biometric data is handled entirely by iOS and is never accessible to Locale.

In-App Purchases

Locale offers an optional in-app purchase processed through Apple's App Store. Purchase transactions are handled entirely by Apple. We do not receive or store your payment information.

iCloud Backup

Your Locale data may be included in your device's iCloud backup if you have iCloud Backup enabled in iOS Settings. This backup is managed by Apple under their privacy policy, not by us.

Children's Privacy

Locale is rated 17+ and is not intended for children under 17. We do not knowingly collect data from children.

Changes to This Policy

If we update this policy, we'll post the revised version here with an updated effective date. Because our usage data is anonymous, we have no way to notify you directly — check this page if you're curious.
